How to prepare for a hike

Hiking can be a lot of fun, and some people even call it therapeutic. You can spend a few days alone in the woods or turn it into an opportunity to bond with your friends and family. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or this is your first time attempting this activity, there are a few things you should know before heading into the woods. 

First and foremost, you must understand that in order to go hiking, especially if you plan on taking a lengthy journey, you must be in good physical condition.  It doesn’t mean you have to weigh a certain amount or be the sort of person who only goes to the gym every single day, but it is necessary to be strong and resilient.  The easiest way of accomplishing this is by preparing ahead of time, at least a month in advance, and by taking long daily walks. Try to walk at least a few miles every day, and gradually increase the distance. Swimming is another excellent approach to prepare for the hike since this activity helps you increase endurance. Of course, the standard morning exercises are essential, specifically those that target your leg muscles. 

In addition, you must prepare your hiking essentials. They are very dependent on the weather, so check back several times throughout the month to see if the forecast has changed. The backpack is undoubtedly the most important part of any hiking trip; it has to be spacious yet light so that you can carry all of your essentials without making your journey more difficult. There are a few items you should pack, such as water, canned food, rain gear, a few extra clothes, and a sleeping bag, and once again it all depends on the weather you’re going on a trip in, because if you’re traveling in the winter, you’ll need a lot more things. 

Clothing is another very important component of your packing that you should take into consideration. Don’t wear and don’t pack cotton base-layer, because it will absorb all the sweat and moisture which will make you feel damp for the entire trip. Go for other fabrics such as Merino wool, as it is literally everything you need for a hike. It is soft, comfortable, breathable, lightweight, and it helps your body to regulate its temperature, so that it will keep you feeling cool and fresh in the heat and will make you warm when the temperature drops. It is great for under-layers, but also for the sweaters that you’ll need during the hike.
